Dr. Hurd's research examines older adults’ everyday experiences of aging, body image, embodiment, health and illness. Using qualitative methods, she studies how older adults’ perceive and experience their changing, aging bodies and how those perceptions and experiences are shaped and constrained by cultural norms and their social position. Thus, she considers how factors like age, ethnicity, cultural, gender ideals, gender identity, health status, sexual orientation, and social class influence how people experience growing older as well as their sense of societal inclusion or exclusion.
