Community Engagement Event
Faculty Faceoff at Science World
February 22, 2019, 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Cluster members Calvin Kuo, Romain Tisserand and Lyndia Wu hosted a booth at Science World:
Calvin and Romain's research is based in the Sensorimotor Physiology Laboratory in the department of Kinesiology at the University of British Columbia. Along with Lyndia who is based at the Sensing in Biomechanical Processes Lab, they invited participants to explore how we sense and generate motion. They demonstrated a number of wearable sensing systems that allow researchers to measure live human motion and allow animators and gamers to control virtual avatars in any environment. They also gave a live demonstration about how our knowledge of the human sensory system can be harnessed to hijack our own perceptions of motion. With a simple electrical current directed towards the inner ear, turning sensations can be induced and humans can be literally "driven" through an obstacle course!
The event went down a hit with the group even picking up some prizes for Best Dressed, Future Thinking, and People's Choice.
